“A soldier lives forever as long as he is remembered…” - Timothy McCoy, National Historian 2nd Ranger Co. Association

===========

The all-black, all-volunteer 2nd Airborne Ranger Company unit was activated in 1950 during the Korean War. It became one of the first African-American units to participate in combat operations. Their missions mostly consisted of landing behind enemy lines to disrupt North Korean Army supply chains through reconnaissance and direct action missions.

The Company, comprised entirely of qualified volunteers who succeeded in Ranger selection, served with distinction during the war earning a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in combat against the enemy.

Although public casualty records are limited, African-American units faced discrimination and racism— which led to their units being assigned more dangerous missions and generally resulted in disproportionate casualties in Korea.

The 2nd Airborne's performance helped disprove racist notions about combat roles and though the Company was disbanded in 1951, its legacy as a trailblazer helped pave the way for the racial integration of the US armed forces.
